5. Earth-wide telescope confirms black hole’s shadow is ‘real’
- Detailed Image: They produced a clearer, more detailed image of the supermassive black hole at the center of galaxy M87, first photographed in 2017.
- Confirmed Size and Shape: Using improved tech, they were able to reconfirm the dimensions and circular form of the ring-like ‘shadow’ produced by the black hole, proving the original image accurate.
- Gravitational Lensing: The image supports Einstein’s theory of relativity. The ring of light is formed by the extreme gravity of the black hole bending light rays around it (just like a magnifying glass).
- Dynamic Changes: Observations showed slight shifts in the black hole’s accretion disk (material swirling around it) and a jet of energy emitted from it.
- The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration hopes to conduct more detailed observations and even generate a “movie” of M87’s black hole, showing changes over time. This may reveal even more secrets about how these colossal forces at the heart of galaxies function. black hole.
