2. KERALA – HUMAN ANIMAL CONFLICT
- Kerala Assembly adopted a unanimous resolution urging the Centre to suitably amend the Wildlife Protection Act
- To mitigate human-wildlife conflicts
- Members across the aisle supported the resolution aimed at Eliminating wildlife that Trespass on human habitations
- Imperilling the life and property of citizens
- Destroying crops
- Preying on livestock
- The resolution demanded that -The Central law empower Chief Forest Conservators to use lethal force to liquidate wild animals
- Only that trespass on residential localities and pose an imminent threat to human life The Centre to initiate scientific and humane measures to control the wildlife population
3. BEHMAI MASSACRE
- Four decades after the sensational Behmai massacre in which 20 people were shot dead in a Kanpur village by bandit Phoolan Devi and her gang
- A court pronounced its verdict
- Handing life sentence to one of the two last surviving accused
- The anti-robbery court found Shyam Babu guilty but acquitted Vishwanath due to lack of evidence
- A total of 35 people, including Phoolan Devi, were accused in the case and all of them except for Shyam Babu and Vishwanath have died
- In the years following the massacre, Phoolan Devi surrendered and became an MP
4. BRITISH ERA ACT TO BLOCK INTERNET IN PUNJAB
- Union Home Ministry issued two orders, on February 10 and February 12, under Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885
- The Rules, framed in 2017, empower the Union Home Secretary or a State’s Home Secretary to pass directions to suspend telecom services, including the Internet, in an area “due to public emergency or public safety”
- Any such orders by the Union Home Secretary have to be reviewed by a committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary within five day
