TNPSC CURRENT AFFAIRS – 30.5.2024

  1. UAPA TRIBUNAL
  • A tribunal under the unlawful activities Prevention Act has upheld the centre’s decision to declare seven valley-based Meitei extremist organisations as unlawful associations for the next five years.
  • In the past five years the seven outfits were responsible for 335 of 689 violent incidents reported in Manipur.
  • When the Centre declares an organization as unlawful, a tribunal is established by the Centre to further investigate and confirm whether the decision is justified. The notification by the Centre does not take effect until the tribunal confirms the declaration and the order is published in the official gazette.

2. China agrees to revive cooperation with Seoul, Tokyo but miffed by their US ties

  • China agreed to revive three-way cooperation with South Korea and Japan in the face of shared challenges but issued a veiled rebuke against the two countries expanding security cooperation with the United States.
  • A trilateral meeting between the three countries has been conducted for the first time in more than four years.
  • The three leaders agreed to promote people to people and cultural exchanges and establish safe supply chain networks.
  • In recent years, as China’s relations with the United States have deteriorated, it has increasingly obstructed Washington- led efforts to impose stricter sanctions on the North. In recent years, Beijing has blamed US-South Korea joint military drills for escalating regional tensions. China has consistently supported calls for the denuclearisation of the entire Korean peninsula

3. 4G AND 5G

  • Ghana has signed deals with a reliance jio subsidiary to build 4G and 5G infrastructure as the African country aims at enhancing its telecom capabilities.
  • Ghana’s minister said that India was a strategic choice due to its similar demographics and Ghana wants to replicate the Indian story on telecom penetration.
  • Ghana is a country in West Africa. It abuts the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, sharing borders with Ivory Coast in the west, Burkina Faso in north, and Togo in the east.

4. EUCALYPTUS PLANTING IN KERALA

  • The Kerala government issued an order allowing the Kerala Forest Development Corporation to plant eucalyptus trees for its financial sustenance in 2024-25. Environmentalists soon protested the decision saying the move would adversely affect forests and heighten human animal conflicts in future.
  • The corporation was established in 1975 as part of a dynamic production forestry enterprise. It has around 7000 hectares of plantations.
  • Against the backdrop of climate change the Kerala Govt had decided to phase out plantations of eucalyptus and pine by 2024 and replace them with natural forests. This process is called eco restoration.
  • Eucalyptus is a large genus of more than 660 species of shrubs and tall trees of the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). Some of the tallest trees in the world are eucalypti. It is native to Australia, Tasmania, and nearby islands.

5. India relies on China for most electronic and electrical goods

  • In financial year 2024 china once again became India’s top trading partner. This is the sixth time in the last ten years that China has beaten the US to emerge as India’s top partner.
  • A country is designated as a top trading partner if the total value of India’s exports to it and imports from it exceeds that of any other country.
  • China’s status as India’s top trading partner is primarily due to the exceptionally high volume of imports from China. While imports from China have surged, exports to China have remained stagnant.
  • A majority of the items that India imports from China can be classified as electronics and electrical items. China is the major source for most of these items with very few alternatives.
  • From 2019 to 2024, India’s exports to China have stagnated at around USD 16 billion annually, while imports from China have surged from USD 70.3 billion in 2018-19 to over USD 101 billion in 2023-24, resulting in a cumulative trade deficit exceeding USD 387 billion over five years.
