  1. WILL RESOLVE GOVERNOR T.N GOVT TUSSLE IN THE SPRIT OF THE CONSTITUTION, SAYS SC

SUBJECT: POLITY

  • SC intervened in the conflict between TN Govt. & Governor R.N. Ravi over delayed assent to Bills.
  • Governor stalled Bills on higher education, prosecution, prisoner remission, and VC appointments.
  • Legal & Constitutional Concerns:
  • Article 200gives the Governor three options for state Bills:
  • a. Grant Assent
  • b. Withhold Assent
  • c. Reserve Bill for the President
  • TN Govt. argued that the Governor acted beyond jurisdiction byreferring re-enacted Bills to the President.
  • State’s Arguments Against Governor’s Action: Senior Advocates (Mukul Rohatgi, A.M. Singhvi)argued that the Governor’s referral to the President was unconstitutional.
  • Status of Bills: 1 Bill approved,7 rejected,2 ignored.
  • TN Govt. called the Governor’s actions“ex-facie illegal.”

2. INDIA – INDONESIA TIES AS A BEACON FOR GLOBAL RELATIONS

3. NO GOOD FOR ANYONE, OBSERVES SC ON POLITICISATION OF SPORTS ADMINSTRATION

  • Stressed that sports governance should focus on professionalism, not political or judicial affiliations.

  • Petition filed by kabaddi players Priyanka & Pooja against the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI).

4. MONETARY AND FISCAL POLICIES NEED TO WORK IN TANDEM

  • Tools: Government spending (infrastructure projects, social welfare programs) and taxation (direct and indirect taxes).
  • Objective:Influencing aggregate demand,  promoting economic growth, and achieving social objectives.

5. . HC SHOULD GET FIRST SHOT AT PLEAS ON UAPA AMENDMENT, SAYS SC

SUBJECT: SOCIAL ISSUES

  • Supreme Court directed that petitions challenging the2019 amendment of UAPA must first be heard by the High Court.
  • Petitioners’ Demand:A single High Court (preferably Delhi HC)should hear all petitions for uniformity.
  • Concerns Over Fundamental Rights:
  •  Individual classification as ‘terrorists’ without trial violates dignity & free speech (Article 21).
  • Reversal of burden of proof—accused must prove innocence, raising judicial overreach concerns.
  • Key Provisions of UAPA (Amendment) Act, 2019:
  • Modifies Chapter VI of UAPA (1967). 
  • Sections 35 & 36:Govt. can declare individuals as terrorists without trial.
  • Earlier, only organizations could be listed as terrorist groups.
  • Legal & Constitutional Debate:
  • Violation of Article 21?—Tagging individuals as terrorists before trial contradicts” procedure established by law.”
  • Judicial scrutiny on expanded executive powers in counterterrorism laws
