  1. THE CONVICTION RATE RECORDED BY NATIONAL INVESTIGATION AGENCY

SUBJECT: NATIONAL

  • The NIA is the Central Counter-Terrorism Law Enforcement Agency of India mandated to investigate all the offences affecting the sovereignty, security and integrity of India.
  • It was constituted under the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Act, 2008.
  • The agency is empowered to deal with the investigation of terror related crimes across states without special permission from the states underwritten proclamation from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • Headquarters: New Delhi
  • Origin: In the wake of the26/11 Mumbai terror attack in November 2008,which shocked the entire world, the then government decided to establish the NIA
  • Jurisdiction: The law under which the agency operates extends to the whole of India and also applies to Indian citizens outside the country.
  • Persons in the service of the government wherever they are posted.
  • Persons on ships and aircraft registered in India wherever they may be.
  • Persons who commit a scheduled offence beyond India against the Indian citizen or affecting the interest of India.

2. ILO REPORT ASKS NATIONS TO UPHOLD FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION AT WORK

SUBJECT: INTERNATIONAL

  • The International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Social Dialogue Report, released in Geneva, emphasizes upholding fundamental rights at work, particularly freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining.
  • International Labour Organisation (ILO): The International Labour Organisation (ILO)is a specialized agency of the United Nations that focuses on promoting labor rights, decent work, and social justice globally. It brings together governments, employers, and workers to set international labor standards.
  • Established in 1919 by the Treaty of Versaillesas an affiliated agency of the League of Nations.
  • Became the first affiliated specialized agency of the United Nations in 1946.
  • Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland
  • Founding Mission:social justice is essential to universal and lasting peace.
  • Promotes internationally recognized human and labour rights.
  •  Received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1969.
  • For improving peace among classes
  • Pursuing decent work and justice for workers
  • Providing technical assistance to other developing nations

3. WILL GO TO ANY EXTENT POSSIBLE TO ERADICATE MANUAL SCAVENGING : SC

SUBJECT: SOCIAL ISSUES

  • Commitment to Eradication: The Supreme Court reaffirmed its October 2023 judgment and vowed to go to “any extent possible” to ensure the elimination of this practice.
  • Government Accountability: The Court criticized the Union and State governments for failing to implement measures outlined in the 2023 judgment.
  • Compensation Enhancement: The Court increased the compensation for sewer death victims from ₹10 lakh to ₹30 lakh.
  • NAMASTE Scheme:It questioned the lack of visible results under the government’s National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE)scheme. 
  • Judicial Observations: The Court highlighted the systemic neglect of affected individuals, calling the continuation of such practices a “mockery” of constitutional values
  • NAMASTE Scheme: National Action Plan for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem
  • The NAMASTE Scheme aims to eliminate manual scavenging by promoting mechanized cleaning of septic tanks and sewers, ensuring the safety, dignity, and rehabilitation of sanitation workers.

4. INDIAN SCIENTISTS DEVELOP NOVEL GENE THERAPY FOR HAEMOPHILIA

SUBJECT: SCIENCE

  • Indian scientists have successfully developed and tested a novel gene therapy for treating severe haemophilia A, marking a significant achievement in indigenous medical research.Unlike regular infusions, gene therapy introduces a therapeutic gene into the body, enabling the production of clotting factors.
  • Haemophilia A is a rare hereditary blood disorder.
  • Caused by deficiency of Factor VIII (blood-clotting factor)
  • India has world’s second-largest patient pool (40,000-1,00,000 patients)
  • Current treatment cost: ₹2.54 crore per patient over 10 years

5. WEBB CONFIRMS THE COSMOS IS EXPANDING AT UNEXPECTED RATE

SUBJECT: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

  • The James Webb Space Telescope confirms that the universe is expanding at a faster rate than predicted, intensifying the mystery of dark energy and dark matter’s role in cosmic evolution.
  • The James Webb Space Telescope(JWST) is the most powerful space telescope ever built, launched on December 25, 2021, by NASA in collaboration with ESA (European Space Agency)and CSA (Canadian Space Agency).
  • Designed to observe the universe’s earliest galaxies,star formation, and exoplanet atmospheres.
  • Aims to study the cosmic evolution, including phenomena like dark energy and dark matter
  • Located at the second Lagrange point (L2), about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, ensuring a stable and cold environment for precise measurements.
  • Provides insights into the Big Bang, early galaxy formation, and the role of dark energy in the universe’s accelerated expansion.
  • Offers critical advancements over its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope, particularly in infrared observations
