1)IIT-Kanpur partners with defence PSU to focus on innovation

IIT Kanpur’s technology business incubator, the Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC), has signed a CSR Agreement with Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited, one of the seven new Defence Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) formed by converting the Ordnance Factory Board into fully government-owned enterprises.

The agreement was signed at the Ordnance Factory Kanpur in the presence of dignitaries from SIIC, IIT Kanpur, and Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AW&EIL).

According to an official release from IIT-K on Monday, the partnership between SIIC and AW&EIL aims to provide financial support to the startup ecosystem and promote the incubation of new technology, knowledge, and innovation-based startups at IIT Kanpur under the CSR Policy of AW&EIL, Ordnance Factory.

2)Muthuvans and Human-Animal Conflicts

The Muthuvans are a tribe of cultivators who dwell in the hilly regions of Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore and Madurai and Kerala’s Adimali and Devikulam forest regions of Idukki district. They have a rich cultural heritage and are known for their agricultural practices. However, in recent times, they have been facing severe problems with human-animal conflict, particularly with elephants. In response to this issue, the Kerala High Court appointed a committee of experts to investigate the matter.

1)T.N. Governor Ravi grants assent to Bill banning online gambling’
Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has given his assent to a bill that bans online gambling games and regulates them. The bill had been passed by the Tamil Nadu government for the second time on March 23, 2023. With the Governor’s approval, the Chief Minister informed the Assembly that the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill has been cleared, and a gazette notification is expected to follow.

Provisions of the bill

Those violating the provision on advertisement for promotion or inducing people to play online gambling/games of chance face punishment with imprisonment upto one year or with fine, which may extend to Rs five lakh, or both.

In Tamil Nadu, any person indulging in online gambling/online games of chance with money or other stakes shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three months or with fine upto Rs 5,000 or both.

Any person who provides online gambling service or games of Poker and Rummy with money or other stakes shall face punishment with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with fine which may extend to Rs 10 lakh or both.

2)Himachal Pradesh launches project ‘Sanjeevani’ to empower dairy farmers

Himachal Pradesh’s rural economy is heavily dependent on agriculture and animal husbandry, with livestock care being a crucial component of every household. To support farmers and enhance their livelihoods, the state government, led by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has launched a new initiative called ‘Sanjeevani’.

The ‘Sanjeevani’ project is a farmer-friendly initiative towards empowering the livelihoods of small dairy farmers and livestock owners. It will enhance the lives of many farmers from rural remote areas by providing them with convenient and quality care for their livestock at their doorstep. The collaboration will be very beneficial in ensuring holistic veterinary services to farmers.

The doorstep veterinary services will serve farmers in 44 blocks of all 12 districts. The centralised call centre at Directorate of Animal Husbandry will be integrated with 44 mobile veterinary ambulances.

Exercise Cope India 23 starts between Indian Air Force and US Air Force

Exercise Cope India 23 has started between the Indian Air Force and the United States Air Force on Monday. This 11 days exercise is being held at Panagarh, Kalaikunda and Agra air force stations. The exercise aims at enhancing mutual understanding between the two Air Forces and sharing their best practices. In the exercise C-130J, C-17, MC-130J aircrafts are participating.

Coastal Aquaculture Authority (Amendment) Bill 2023

On March 29, 2023, the Indian government introduced the Coastal Aquaculture Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2023, to amend the provisions of the Coastal Aquaculture Authority Act, 2005. The primary purpose of this bill is to promote sustainable coastal aquaculture in India while ensuring ease of doing business.

Encouraging Environment-Friendly Aquaculture Practices

The 2023 Bill promotes several newer forms of environment-friendly coastal aquaculture practices. This includes cage culture, seaweed culture, bi-valve culture, marine ornamental fish culture, and pearl oyster culture. By encouraging these practices, the government aims to ensure sustainable aquaculture, reduce the ecological impact, and provide new avenues for livelihood to coastal communities.
