1)Union Minister Sonowal inaugurates the technology arm of Shipping Ministry in TN

Chennai, Apr 24 (PTI) Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who inaugurated the National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways & Coasts (NTCPWC) at the Discovery Campus of IIT, Madras on Monday said the centre will enable Make In India tech solutions for the sector and propel overall growth.

The NTCPWC, the technology arm of Union Shipping Ministry will be expanded to include world-class multifunctional maritime laboratories in the areas of climate change, marine robotics, marine informatics and analytics, smart modelling and simulation. A maritime innovation hub, which will act as core of breeding ecosystem for fostering startups and innovation in the nation, will be setup at the NTCPWC, he said.

2)PM Modi to flag off India’s first Water Metro in Kochi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first Water Metro that connects 10 islands around Kochi through battery-operated electric hybrid boats for seamless connectivity with the city.

Water Metro provides a distinctive urban transportation system that offers a comparable level of convenience and travel experience to traditional metro systems. This mode of transit is particularly valuable in cities such as Kochi.

“Kochi’s water metro project is a unique project. This is a game-changing transport system because Kochi is surrounded by many islands and out of them 10 islands are very important and thickly populated,” Managing Director, Kochi Metro Rail Limited told ANI ahead of PM Modi’s visit to Loknath Behera.

Tamil Nadu Assembly passes bill allowing 12-hour work in factories

A few industry associations have welcomed the Tamil Nadu  government’s passing of a bill in the State Assembly on Friday to amend the Factories Act, 1948, to effect reforms in the daily working hours for workers in factories.

The proposed move will facilitate an increase in working hours for factory workers from 8 hours to 12 hours.

“However, there is no change in the clauses of 8-hour work, weekly holiday, and additional wages,” said C V Ganesan, State Minister for Labour Welfare and Skill Development said while tabling the bill in the assembly. The bill was passed amid criticism from several parties.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

PSLV-C55/TeLEOS-2 Mission

Recently, ISRO successfully launched the PSLV-C55/TeLEOS-2 mission to send two Singapore-made satellite into space. An Orbital Experimental module was also launched as part of this mission to carry out tests in the space vacuum.

TeLEOS-2 and Lumelite-4 are the two Singapore-made satellites that were launched aboard the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

The PSLV-C55 mission, under which the two satellites were launched, is significant in more ways than one. It marks ISRO’s first commercial mission of the year 2022, and also its first mission to use the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM) – a spent fourth stage of the launch vehicle that has been repurposed as an experimental platform for scientific experiments.

Odisha’s Bhubaneswar to host 2023 Intercontinental Cup in June
Four-team Intercontinental Football Cup will be held in Bhubaneswar from June 9 to 18. This will be the third edition of the tournament with the previous two being held in Mumbai (2018) and Ahmedabad (2019). Host India will be joined by Lebanon, Mongolia and Vanuatu in the tournament. The Indian men’s national team had previously never played against Mongolia and Vanuatu. Against Lebanon, the hosts hold a record of playing six matches.
