1)India Considers Joining G7-Piloted ‘Climate Club’ to Boost Climate Action
India is reportedly considering joining the ‘Climate Club,’ an environmental initiative started by the G7 to promote stronger climate action. The club’s three pillars are advancing ambitious and transparent climate policies, supporting substantial industrial decarbonisation, and encouraging international cooperation towards a just transition.

According to reports, the Indian environment ministry is expected to initiate inter-ministerial discussions soon to consult different ministries on the sectoral implications of joining the Climate Club. The move comes as India faces increasing pressure to ramp up its climate efforts to meet global climate goals.

2)Government Programme for NCD Renamed

The existing National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) programme has been renamed National Programme for Prevention & Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD).

  • It has been renamed to subsume all types of NCDs.
  • Further, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has renamed the Comprehensive Primary Healthcare Non-Communicable Disease (CPHC NCD IT) system as the National NCD Portal to cover a wider population for screening and management of non-communicable diseases.
  • NPCDCS is being implemented under the National Health Mission (NHM) across the country.

Aim

It was launched in 2010 with a focus on strengthening infrastructure, human resource development, health promotion, early diagnosis, management and referral.

Uttar Pradesh to get its first Pharma Park in Lalitpur district
The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the establishment of the state’s first Pharma Park in Lalitpur district of Bundelkhand. The project will require the transfer of 1500 hectares of land from the Animal Husbandry Department to the Industrial Development Department. The government has allocated a budget of Rs 1560 crore for the development and provision of necessary facilities to investors in Lalitpur Pharma Park.

To begin with, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared soon after selecting a consultant for the development of the Pharma Park. Entrepreneurs setting up units in the Pharma Park will receive several benefits, including a 100% exemption in stamp duty on land purchase, capital subsidy, construction of houses for laborers, and employment generation. The government aims to encourage investment in the medical devices manufacturing sector and create employment opportunities for the people of Uttar Pradesh.

Buland Bharat Exercise

The Indian Army recently conducted a divisional-level integrated training exercise, codenamed Exercise Buland Bharat, in the high-altitude ranges of the eastern theatre in Arunachal Pradesh. The purpose of the month-long exercise was to verify plans for reducing integrated firepower through coordinated firing of artillery guns and fire support components of Infantry towards the destruction of designated targets. Additionally, the exercise included evaluating the coordinated application of the surveillance and firepower capabilities of the Artillery and Infantry.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Tool to detect glioblastoma

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) have developed a machine learning-based computational tool to detect malignant tumours in the brain and spinal cord. Called glioblastoma mutiform drivers (GBMDriver), the tool is available publicly online.

Glioblastoma is a fast and aggressively growing tumour with limited therapeutic options and a survival rate of less than two years from the time of initial diagnosis.

The researchers said their tool could be applied to other diseases; serve as important criteria for disease prognosis; and be a valuable resource to identify mutation-specific drug targets to design therapeutic strategies.

Wayanad District Tops ODF Plus Ranking

Wayanad, a district in the southern Indian state of Kerala, has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first ODF Plus district in India. This is a significant milestone in the country’s efforts towards maintaining cleanliness and sanitation under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Clean India Mission).

The Wayanad district secured the first position in the ODF Plus rankings in the three-star category. Following Wayanad were Mancheriyal district in Maharashtra and Anupur in Madya Pradesh. Wayanad scored a perfect 100 points in the ODF ranking, while Mancheriyal and Anupur got 90.45 and 88.79 points, respectively. The ODF Plus scores for panchayats and districts were evaluated by considering the ODF Plus progress report submitted by the villages before October 1, 2022.
